Around 166 supporters of the Tricity LPG Autorickshaw Union were detained by Chandigarh Police on Wednesday from Sector 34 where they had assembled to protest against the Chandigarh Administration.
The members along with Surinder Bhardwaj, president Chandigarh Janata Dal United, to which the Union is affiliated were booked under Section 107/51 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for defying Section 144 imposed by the District Commissioner by organising a rally at the Sector 34 Mela grounds. They were detained at the Sector 34 police station where they were raising slogans against the UT Administration.
After being released within a few hours, Bhardwaj said, “Section 144 was imposed to demoralise the spirit of the people and to sidetrack the demands of the union for which they are striving since a very long time.” The union demands implementation of ban that was imposed in 2008 on the petrol and diesel plying vehicles in the city. “Not only have that been banned, majority of these autos don’t have the required permits to work in the city,” he added.
The union members also burnt effigies of the Chandigarh Administration which they alleged practised dual policies by not implementing its own ban and supported an indifferentattitude towards LPG autorickshaw drivers.
