Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) counsel Prashant Bhushan on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that CBI director Ranjit Sinha is being influenced by the accused companies in the 2G scam.
He said that the entry register of his residence portrays ?very disturbing? and ?explosive material? coming in the way of administration of justice in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
A bench headed by Justice HL Dattu said it will take up on Thursday Bhushan’s plea seeking recusal of the CBI director from the 2G scam investigation on the alleged ground that he was trying to scuttle it. It also asked Bhushan to submit in a sealed cover copies of the CBI director’s residence visitor entry book, allegedly revealing frequent visits by Reliance ADAG Group executives, who are accused in the 2G scam, involved in coal scam and alleged middlemen.
However, Sinha through his senior counsel Vikas Singh denied the allegations, saying it was an attempt to defame him and derail investigations into crucial cases.
While Bhushan was reading his note, senior advocate KK Venugopal, appearing for the CBI, intervened and asked the bench to pass an order that all materials be placed before the court in a sealed envelope.
Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, who was appearing in a 2G-related matter for DMK MP Kanimozhi, one of the accused in the scam, came to the defence of the CBI director by saying ?he is performing his duty well but all kinds of allegations are being levelled.?
Meanwhile, the bench also appointed senior advocate Anand Gover as the new prosecutor in the 2G trial. He replaces UU Lalit who has since been appointed judge of the apex court. The NGO had also alleged that the ?the director has made serious attempts to derail the investigation and prosecution being carried out by the CBI.?
