In a relief to students seeking admission to BCom first year, the Panjab University is likely to accept proposals to create 210 more seats in three colleges in the city in the new academic session, starting on July 10.
GGDSD College, Sector 32 (co-ed); MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, and Guru Gobind Singh College for Women (GGSCW), Sector 26, have sent proposals to the university to increase 70 seats each.
Once approved, the proposals will increase the number of seats in BCom first year to 1,190 in co-education colleges and 910 in women?s colleges of the city.
The proposals have been made in response to the increasing demand for BCom in colleges, according to Dr Jagwant Singh, Registrar of GGDSD College, Sector 32.
Professor R K Gupta, PU Co-ordinator for BCom-I admissions, said, ?We have taken note of the proposals, and requested the university authorities to take a call on this matter at the earliest, so that we can include the increased seats in centralised counselling which will begin on July 3.?
A core committee of the Syndicate will consider the matter on July 2. Sources said the committee was likely to approve the proposals.
In all, a total of 6,845 students have applied for admission to BCom in 11 colleges and the Department of Evening Studies on the campus.
The PU recently announced the first tentative merit list and invited objections. The final merit list will be displayed on June 30, and the first phase of counselling will be held from July 3 to 6 at Law Auditorium.
Surpassing last year?s record, the highest score on the merit list was 114.4 in the non-UT pool and 113.8 in the UT pool, indicating an increase in cut-off this year. The non-UT students will face a tougher competition as only 15 per cent seats are available for them.
