A report by Verisign titled “State of Small Business Online: Perspectives from Small Businesses in India with an online presence” has revealed that websites are online presence of choice for small businesses in India. According to the report, about 57% of Indian SMEs use a company website as their primary online presence. Globally, that number is 72%. Close to 21% of small businesses in India would choose a .net domain name if their preferred extension wasn’t available and 62% created a company website because it makes them look more credible.
A whopping 74% of SMEs in India prefer a .com domain name for their company website and a huge 73% of them would recommend investment in a website to other small companies in their industry.
The report also emphasized that small businesses in India were missing out on opportunities to build their brand online. While many don’t realize there are other ways to use a domain name apart from building a website, 93% of those using branded email say it makes them look more credible. Of the 43% not using branded email, only about one-third knew it was an option even if they didn’t have a website. About 55% SMEs were aware that they could point a domain name to an online presence hosted by another service, like a social media site.
Other Trends that the report points out are that 58% Indian SMEs say that an online presence they have control over is important. Globally, that number is 72%. 47% of SMEs interviewed use social media as a part of their company’s marketing mix and 64% have staff dedicated to digital marketing efforts.
