Opting for semester system

The Kurukshetra University (KU) that started with the lone department of Sanskrit way back in 1956 has already become a multi-faculty university. Its new vice-chancellor RP Bajpai, who took over on February 1, 2008, stresses that his ?first priority would be to introduce a credit-based, semester system on the IIT pattern from the next academic session in KU?. Bajpai set up a nanotechnology laboratory at the Central Scientific Instuments Organisation in Chandigarh during his stint as its director.

Highlighting his priorities, he wanted to make ?concerted efforts to produce employable youth through innovative courses, revamp the existing syllabi and introduce a credit-based semester system on the IIT pattern from the next academic session?.

Kurukshetra varsity has not organised a convocation for many years now. However, Bajpai said convocations would become a regular annual feature and the next convocation would be held soon.

The varsity, whose foundation stone was laid by the first Indian President Rajendra Prasad 43 years ago, today boasts of being a premier centre for advanced study and research in the region. The first university in Haryana now has faculties of arts and languages, science, social sciences, India studies, education, engineering and technology, medical and dental sciences, law, management and business studies, and ayurveda.

There are 105 colleges under its jurisdiction of which 29 are exclusively for girls. The university campus houses two colleges. Some job-oriented courses for regular students include MBA, MIB, MFC, MMT, MCA, MSc (computer science software), home science, information technology, M Tech (Computer Science & Engineering), master of tourism management, MBE, MP Ed, M Com, MA mass communication and information science.

Responding to the needs of the newly emerging job market, Kurukshetra varsity has introduced several professional courses from the current academic session. Apart from M Sc (electronic media), MBA (service management) and M Pharma courses, the university has introduced PG diploma courses in management of developmental and welfare services, fish farm technology, forensic sciences, floriculture, banking and finance.

The university introduced as many as 15 new courses in the current academic year. The new courses includes B Tech in mechanical engineering, M Tech in image and speech processing, MPharm in pharmaceutical science and management,

M Phil in economics and computer science, MBA in service management, postgraduate diploma in fish farming technology, postgraduate diploma courses in forensic science, floriculture and banking and finance.

The Institute of Mass Communications set up recently offers three new courses?postgraduate diploma in web media, postgraduate diploma in internet journalism and MSc electronic media. The sprawling campus has a community centre and 16 hostels for boys and girls including two youth hostels.

The campus has its own sports complex with extensive play-fields, a stadium, gymnasium and a yoga centre as also an air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of over 2,500 and a library with ernet facility. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited the university.
