Ajay Devgn-starrer 'Singham Returns', which was released on Independence Day and had an extra long weekend to power its earnings, flattered only to deceive, having failed to rise to the top, emerging second-best to the supercharged, Salman Khan powered, 'Kick'.
'Singham Returns' has had to settle for becoming the second biggest opener of 2014 with box office collections of Rs 77.64 crore nett over the first weekend.
'Singham Returns' box office collections now stand at Rs 32.09 crore (Friday), Rs 21.05 crore (Saturday) and Rs 24.50 crore (Sunday). It has also fared well in key overseas markets, especially UAE-GCC (Rs 4.97 crore) and USA-Canada (Rs 3.25 crore). 'Singham Returns', which dealt a blow to Salman Khan's 'Kick' to become the year's biggest opening day grosser could not surpass the latter's opening weekend business of Rs 83.83 crore.
It may be mentioned that 'Kick' had made a roaring start in box office collections with an estimated Rs 26.40 crore on a non-holiday (pre-Eid) but the record was broken by 'Singham Returns' Rs 32.09 crore on Day 1.
'Kick' had earlier surpassed the 2014 opening day collection record of Salman's last film 'Jai Ho', which released on January 24, Gunday's (Feb 14) Rs 16.12 crore and '2 States' (April 18) Rs 12.42 crore.
However, 'Singham Returns' is still a very powerful film having climbed to No 8 position among all-time Top 25 Opening Weekend grossers behind 'Dhoom 3' (Rs 107.61 crore), 'Chennai Express' (Rs 100.42 crore), 'Ek Tha Tiger' ( Rs 100.16 crore), 'Ra.One' (Rs 92 crore), 'Bodyguard' (Rs 88.75 crore), 'Kick' (Rs 83.83 crore) and 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' (Rs 80.73 crore).
The much-awaited 'Singham Returns', which brings the unbeatable Rohit Shetty-Ajay Devgn combination together, had a thunderous start across single screens and a solid start at multiplexes.
