SummaryThe chief secretary said the government will spend Rs 100 crore on modernisation of police.

Under attack over worsening law and order in Uttar Pradesh and increasing incidents of crime against women, the Akhilesh Yadav government Saturday effected a massive administrative reshuffle, transferring 66 IAS officers, including 28 district magistrates, and 42 IPS officers, including IGs of three zones and DIGs of five ranges. The government also suspended Badaun SP and decided to take action against the then district magistrate, Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said.

“SP Badaun, Atul Saxena, has been suspended and a decision has been taken to take action against the then district magistrate Chandra Prakash. The new DM has taken charge only two days back,” Ranjan said. L R Kumar, SP (law and order) DGP headquarters, is new SP of Badaun district, he added.

The decision to crack the whip was taken at a meeting convened by Akhilesh and attended by Principal Secretary (Home) Deepak Sighal and DGP A L Banerjee.

Ranjan said the CM has initiated some policy changes for effective maintenance of law and order. He said the DMs and SPs have been asked to visit the scenes of all serious crimes.

He said incidents such as the gangrape-murder of two cousins in Badaun hurt the image of the state and affect its economic development.

The government has also decided to withdraw the gunners provided to all people except those who have been given security on orders of courts or on recommendation of SPs and DMs.

The chief secretary said the government will also spend Rs 100 crore on modernisation of police.

Principal Secretary (Home) Deepak Sighal said police have been asked to “proactively use” the NSA Act, Gangster Act and Goonda Act against known offenders.

The CM has also written a letter to the Chief Justice D U Chandrachud, seeking his permission to set up fast track courts in all districts.
