Alia and I had to bring in real chemistry: Varun Dhawan on Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya success

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya is a big hit already, what with close to Rs 50 crore coming in even before the first week has come to an end. For Varun Dhawan, the film marks a hat-trick of successes after Student of the Year and Main Tera Hero. While this Shashank Khaitan directed film is all set to be his biggest grosser till date (Student of the Year earned close to 70 crore), it also marks Varun’s entry into the world of love stories.

“I would say that the biggest victory for the film is to see people acknowledge that they can see the Alia and me falling in love. When the characters don’t know but the audience finds it out before them, it is an altogether different magic, something that has come out well between Humpty and Kavya. This is the kind of inherent and implicit chemistry that we wanted to bring on between them as it is as real a portrayal as it can be. So the idea was that if audience felt for Raj and Simran, Rahul and Anjali, Veer and Zaara, then they would also feel the same for Humpty and Kavya,” says Varun.

Talking about Rahul and Anjali, they were pretty much Karan Johar’s babies a decade back when the filmmaker began his stint when it came to calling the shots. Now that he has his new babies in the form of Varun and Alia, how much of contribution did Karan Johar had to make for the film?

“As we are all aware, Karan gives a free hand to his directors. Yes, he was there at the script level and then has also been involved in the whole marketing exercise as well as selection of songs. In fact the way ‘Saturday Saturday’ and ‘Samjhaawan’ are looking, it is entirely his brain child. People started talking about the film since these songs had clicked. However beyond that it is Shashank’s show all the way,” informs Varun.

While it is a known fact that Karan offered the film to Varun at midnight, it also happened that the youngster did a walkthrough of the script with dad David Dhawan. “Yes, this is something that I do for each of my films. When he heard out Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, he was more than encouraging for me to hop on to it,” informs Varun.

After being directed by Karan Johar and David Dhawan, Varun is glad that he consented to working with Shashank even though he didn’t have any prior release to his name.

Says Varun, “Shashank is a new director and as a matter of fact we had only newcomers in the whole unit. Even the character artists are from theater as Shashank has handpicked people. Since he too comes from theater, each and every performance turned out to be superb. For each of us out there, the stage was set to showcase what we could bring on the table.”

Well, as is apparent, Karan is indeed happy with what his student has indeed brought on the table!
