Dr Easwaramoorthy Rangaswamy, Director, International Office of Amity Global Business School, Singapore, talks about the programmes offered by the institute and the future plans. Excerpts:

Amity is a well-recognized in India. How do you plan to replicate the success worldwide?

Back in India, Amity is one of the leading names in imparting education, especially business education. The University has developed a strong infrastructure and has also achieved 100% placement. Now the educational group is planning to replicate the same success worldwide. Last year the group started its global expansion programme and established its campus in Singapore, London, San Francisco and New York. Soon the University will be coming up with state-of-the-art campus comprising of quality faculty in Mauritius and Dubai.

Can you throw some light on the history of Amity Singapore?

Amity Global Business School, Singapore is a very young institute. We opened our operations in March 2010. Amity is one of the few schools in the country which re-registered itself under the Private Education Act, which came into effect in December 2009. The Act is a part of the Government of Singapore’s drive to overhaul the educational system in Singapore so as to make it more attractive for foreign students.

On December 1, 2009 there were over 1000 private schools in Singapore and on May 22, 2010 only 65 schools are allowed, which includes Amity Global Business School, Singapore. The rest are trying to re-register themselves or are looking at tie-ups or mergers.

There are many well established institutes so why did you not take over them?

Our main focus has been to build brand Amity. That is why we would like to go greenfield. We also take the location into consideration. For any business school location plays a pivotal role in its success that is why all major business schools are located at the center of a business district. The advantage of Amity is that it is located at Raffles Place in the very center of a business district giving it a unique advantage.

Every institute has a vision. Please tell us what is Amity’s vision and where is it planning to reach in the coming years?

Amity Global Business School, Singapore was registered in March 2010 and on March 20 the first batch of students started taking their classes. The second batch will start from September 2010. Amity in India provides several courses but here in Singapore our core focus area is business education. Our partner here is Anglia Ruskin University, UK. This University is from Cambridge and is one of the largest Universities in East of England.

Amity Global Business School, Singapore is working with other UK or global business schools. In the time to come we will enter into collaborations with aditional partners.

What are the different programmes that you are offering in the Singapore campus?

We are offering five programmes. Three from Anglia Ruskin University and two from Amity itself. The Anglia Ruskin is offering a one-year programme which has three semesters ? both full time and part time. The second one is MSc Management and the third one is BA (Hons) in International Business Strategy. Other than that Amity has its own programmes ? Diploma in Business Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management.

The Government of Singapore is playing a crucial role in promoting Singapore as an educational hub. The projection of the Government itself is to bring in 1,80,000 students. As a part of achieving that target the Government has revamped the entire private educational system. They have introduced a few clauses such as compulsory medical insurance for foreigners.

The cost of living in Singapore is much cheaper as compared to UK, US and Australia. Safety wise, Singapore is the best place.

How will Amity offer a harmonious relationship to the diverse students studying at Amity, Singapore?

Currently we have students from diverse backgrounds including Indian, Singaporean, Swedish, Chinese and Indonesian. The international division of Amity takes care of students right from the moment they de-board at the international airport. We have tie-ups with a group of hostels and make arrangements for the student?s stay at these hostels.

We are looking for more international student base. The strategy that for Amity Global Business school is to have students from across the Pacific rim including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Cambodia, Thailand etc. We are focused on providing top quality business programmes, we want this institution to be an international one, unlike Amity India which is focused on its India operations.

Singapore is an international trade and finance hub and you are sitting in the centre of Singapore. How can Indian students benefit from exposure to one of the top most financial centres in the world?

Students get access to a lot of business houses, which have their headquarters in Singapore. So, students get exposure to their work culture. We arrange visits for our students to these offices so that they can gain more knowledge.

What message would you like to give to Indian students?

This is a place for globally recognised world-class education that provides quality. Due to the low crime rate, this is the perfect place for international students.
