Andhra Pradesh capital to be located around Vijayawada

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to build its capital around the centrally-located Vijayawada following bifurcation. Hyderabad will continue be the shared capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a 10-year-period, as previously decided. Making a statement in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, said that the state would go for decentralised development with three mega cities and 14 smart cities.

“The capital will be in the centrally-located around Vijayawada and will do justice to every city through decentralised development,” Naidu said. “The decision was taken after a comprehensive study of prevailing conditions, potential, and economic growth strategies of each district,” he said. Naidu has also promised to improve, air, rail and road connectivity for all districts to position Andhra Pradesh as a logistics hub and revive economy in the state. Vijayawada is the home to the prosperous Kamma community who form a solid support base for Naidu.

The Naidu government has drawn up ambitious plans to transform Andhra Pradesh into a bustling industrial state and place it among the top three states in the country by 2022. This would include development of 14 major and minor ports, three international airports and 14 domestic airports, three mega cities and 11 ?smart cities? and 28 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are top on the government?s agenda to make AP an air and maritime hub and propel economic development.

Naidu said that the government has proposed five grids which include water, power, road, gas and optic fibre grids and seven missions which comprise primary sector, social empowerment, skill and knowledge development, urban development, industries and infrastructure sector. Besides, creation of inland waterways in the state and a national waterway connecting coastal town Kakinada with Puducherry is also on the anvil. These missions will have specific objectives to push the growth plans envisaged by the government, create jobs and help alleviate poverty, he added.

?A society without poverty, a state that is a centre of technology and a joyous population confident of its bright future. That is my ultimate vision for Andhra Pradesh,? says Naidu.

“I will ensure that we create the entire ecosystem and develop each city into a growth centre and eventually transform Andhra Pradesh into a bustling state,? he said without giving any investment figures or any time frame either.

The state government has also proposed to go for land pooling system to be worked out by a cabinet sub-committee.

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014, which came into force on March 1, 2014, provided for the reorganization of the existing state of Andhra Pradesh. On June 1, 2014, Telangana became the 29th state of India, carved out of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh was thus divided into Telangana with 10 districts while the residual state of Andhra Pradesh took charge of 13 districts.
