Any action on Syria must be backed by UN, says India

India believes it is important to be certain of all the facts relating to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

St Petersburg, Sept 6: India endorses the participation of the United Nations (UN) in establishing the use of chemical weapons in Syria, in tune with most other nations, and believes that any military action should be authorised by the international forum, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said on Friday.

Speaking to news persons, Ahluwalia said that while recent events in Syria had not been discussed during the formal sessions of the G-20 Summit, which began on Thursday, ?they had dominated the discussions during dinner. According to reports, the US and France are convinced that action is called for.

India believes ?it is important to be certain of all the facts relating to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria, keeping in mind past experiences and that any action taken should be under the auspices of the UN.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh, Ahluwalia said, was of the view that?action should not be aimed at a regime change in Syria. The UN, it is believed, will complet its research in a few days. “The secretary-general did not indicate any timelines but the impression I gathered was that it could take several days,” Ahluwalia said.?

?The UN has mobilised a team of scientists to ?collect evidence of the use of chemical weapons and this would be done by analysing samples of tissues of people both dead and alive.
