Apex court agrees to early hearing in Goa mining case

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to give an early date for hearing on Goa mining case.

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to give an early date for hearing on Goa mining case after Sesa Goa, a Vedanta group company and country?s largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the private sector, said there was a need to decide the issue at the earliest.

Earlier, finance minister P Chidambaram had said the government would make a plea to the SC to expedite the hearing, given the fact that a slump in iron ore production and exports have hit the econony.

The apex court had on a PIL by Goa Foundation, an NGO, imposed a blanket ban on mining operations since October last year. A special green Bench headed by Justice AK Patnaik had said it will speak to the chief justice for an early date.

Sesa Goa had earlier sought permission to transport, sell and export 4.766 million tonne of already mined iron ore lying at various locations in Goa.

Seeking modifications of the Supreme Court last year order that suspended mining operations in the state, Sesa Goa, the once-flagship iron ore producer of Anil Agarwal-controlled Vedanta Resources, had argued for lifting the ban in view of thousands of people, who are directly or indirectly involved with mining, having lost their sole source of income.
