In the last five years, Asus managed to make a strong impression in the laptop market and it is now aiming to do the same for tablets and all-in-ones. With this transformer AiO P1801, Asus has tried its hand with a new breed of device that works like a PC and also a tablet. We find out whether the all-in-one product is a viable option for consumers.
The PC-part of the AiO is powered by Windows 8 and the features are housed in an unassuming black base station, which sits atop a sturdy stand. And the dock stands on a base made of an angled sheet of aluminium that gives it a stylish look. There is a power button on the right of both, PC and tablet. Also, you have a DVD-RW slot and USB port for the wireless mouse and keyboard that comes along with the AiO. On the left, you have four USB 3.0 ports, SD/MMC card slot, and 3.5 mm audio ports. Apart from that you have an HDMI-out port at the back, a Gigabit Ethernet port, built-in Wi-Fi and an analog TV Tuner that turns this device into a television set. The overall build quality is excellent.
The best part of this device is mobility with style, once it is powered on, the AiO boots into Windows 8, and the Android tablet also boots simultaneously, so you can start working on Windows 8 while the screen is docked on the base unit and also you can pick up the screen, and use as an Android tablet that continues to act as a remote desktop.
It is pertinent to give you a separate use and functioning of the AiO. As an all-in-one PC, the Transformer looks distinctive. The PC bit of the Transformer is quite powerful. It comes with 4 GB RAM only but performs quite well as a desktop on Windows 8. A 1TB HDD provides plenty of storage capacity, which is non-expandable. The AiO delivers basic graphic output, which makes it not-so-good for gaming. The speakers on the PC as well as the tablet sound really loud and you won’t need to attach external speakers to this AiO. With PCMark 7 the AiO scored 3730, compared to this another AiO, HP Envy 23 Touchsmart scored 3033.
One can use the AiO as a tablet by simply pulling it upwards. As for the tablet it is 18.4 inch screen with
