Lunar eclipse 2018, Super Blue Blood Moon India Live Updates: Stargazers are seizing the ‘Once in a blue moon’ opportunity! The rarest of rare space phenomenon is taking place on Wednesday, January 31. A total Lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan 2018) has occurred with a blue moon, known as a Super Blue Blood Moon and it is the first Lunar Eclipse of 2018. The celestial event is a lunar trifecta: a supermoon (a moon at perigee, the closest to Earth that it gets in its orbit), a total lunar eclipse (a blood moon), and a blue moon (the second full moon of a calendar month). The portion of the total moon inside the Umbral shadow will only be illuminated by sunlight refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere. The duration of the celestial phenomena will last for over an hour.

6: 43 pm: The fifth largest moon in the solar system, Earth’s moon is the only place beyond Earth where humans have set foot. The brightest and largest object in our night sky, the moon makes Earth a more livable planet by moderating our home planet’s wobble on its axis, leading to a relatively stable climate. It also causes tides, creating a rhythm that has guided humans for thousands of years. The moon was likely formed after a Mars-sized body collided with Earth.

6: 26 pm: Super Blue Blood Moon is seen in the skies of Bhubaneswar.

6: 14 pm: Visuals of Super Blue Blood Moon from Kolkata

6: 10 pm: And it’s starting! On August 21, 2017, the Moon blocked the Sun and cast its shadow on the Earth. Now during the lunar eclipse, the Earth is blocking the Sun to cast its shadow on the Moon.

6: 01 pm: NASA is calling it a lunar trifecta: the first super blue blood moon since 1982. That combination won’t happen again until 2037.

5: 53 pm: When a full moon occurs twice in a month, the second full moon is called a blue moon. This also led to the term ‘Once in a blue moon’, as it is relatively rare to witness!

5: 42 pm: Scientists are keenly studying the sharp, sudden drop in temperature at the lunar surface, as Earth’s shadow blankets the moon. During the more than one hour of totality, the temperature will plunge 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), said lunar scientist Noah Petro of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He’s deputy project scientist for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, circling the moon since 2009. His team is taking special precautions to keep the spacecraft warm during the eclipse.

5: 35 pm: The overlap of a blue moon – the second full moon in a calendar month – with a lunar eclipse while the moon is at its closest approach to the earth is the first such celestial trifecta since 1982, said Noah Petro, a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center outside Washington.

5: 10 pm: It’s the first time in 35 years a blue moon has synced up with a super moon and a total lunar eclipse

4: 08 pm: Meanwhile, thousands of skywatchers across the tech hub in Bengaluru are waiting for a rare celestial spectacle when the Moon will appear brighter and turn red during an eclipse later on Wednesday. “This lunar eclipse is special because a supermoon (appears larger than usual in its perigee), blue Moon (second full Moon of the month) and blood Moon (appears red during eclipse) will all coincide at once,” the Director of Nehru Planetarium Pramod G. Galgali.

3: 30 PM: Hundreds of skywatchers are expected to huddle at the Beijing Planetarium at dusk on Wednesday to witness a “super blood blue moon” – a three-part lunar phenomenon not seen since the late Qing dynasty more than 150 years ago.

3.00 PM: New Zealand is about to witness the very rare celestial event, the Super Blue Blood moon. However, many parts of the country are under thick clouds that may hinder the view. This lunar eclipse in New Zealand and Australia is happening since 1866. The Met depart of New Zealand has suggested that the residents of Gisborne may get the best viewing experience.

10.30 AM: The interesting bit that will happen on January 31, is that a Supermoon and a blue moon will appear together along with a lunar eclipse, and we will get to see the rarest of rare sights. A supermoon appears when the moon’s orbit is nearest to the earth, occurring at the same time as a full moon. And a blue appears when two full moons appear in a single month.

10.00 AM: The Supermoon is extremely rare. Generally, it only occurs once every 14 months and will not happen again until January 2019.
