After Maruti Suzuki India, it is now Bajaj Auto’s turn to face the heat on labour trouble with around 1,200 workers at its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand agitating over salary hike.

The workers who have been demanding a salary hike of R8,000 per month have decided to go slow on production at the 66-acre plant until their discussions with the management and the owners come to a satisfactory conclusion. The development comes on a day the company reported a 2% slip in its monthly sales at 352,219 units. In the motorcycle segment, the company managed to stay afloat with a 1.23% increase in sales at 321,992 units in May against 317,919 units last year in the same month.

Sources said contrary to the demanded hike amount, the management, according to its earlier decision, has decided to raise salary between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 per month. A meeting between the workers and the management has been tentatively fixed a fortnight later, until which the workers are expected to suppress the production to about 1,700 units a day against the capacity of 4,000 units, sources told FE.

The Pantnagar plant currently accounts for a little more than one-fourth of the company’s total two-wheeler production. While negotiations between the two sides are on for a few days now, the management had urged the workers to seamlessly run operations on the premise and that the owner family along with the management would discuss the contentious matter with the workers and only then fix the figure.

However, a handful workers were denied entry into the facility early on Monday morning triggering a strike which compelled the district administration to call for paramilitary forces, a senior member of the union told FE.

When contacted a Bajaj Auto spokesperson said, “The information you have regarding Pantnagar plant seems to be incorrect. We had some issues with minor disturbance to production for about a day. This has been sorted out. Normal production has been resumed.?

While late on Monday afternoon the issue was resolved, workers decided to go slow on the production at the facility until their salary hike was firmed up.
