BAJAJ Auto has taken on Hero Motocorp and Honda with the launch of its new 100 cc motorcycle, the Discover 100 Tourer, for the mass market segment. The motorcycle is priced at Rs 50,500 (ex-showroom Delhi) and will take on Splendor and Passion from Hero as well as Dream Yuga from Honda. Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto, unveiled the new Discover 100T at the company headquarters in Akurdi on Monday.
Bajaj has been dominating the sports range with its Pulsar brand of motorcycles but 100cc range and the Discover 100T will fill the gap of its entry-level motorcycles.
K Srinivas, president, motorcycle business, Bajaj Auto, said For too long, the average commuter had to be satisfied with boring and undifferentiated 100cc bikes. While 100cc bikes do offer good mileage, their style, features and performance leave a lot to be desired. The steady growth of the more expensive 100cc bikes at the cost of the cheaper models is a clear evidence of this. The new Discover 100T delivers power of a 125cc with the economy of a 100cc to bring in the joy of riding to this segment, Srinivas said.
The Discover 100T is powered by Bajajs patented four-valve DTS-i technology engine delivering 10.2 Ps of power with a fuel efficiency of 87 km per litre. The bikes comes with five-speed gear box and auto choke for easy start in all weather conditions, gas-filled nitrox suspension, double cradle chassis, flicker-free lighting and electric start as standard. The company has styled the bike to give it a more sporty look with a muscular tank, 10-spoke alloy wheels and contrasting two-tone graphics. The bike is based on the new Discover platform.
Bajaj Auto is banking on new launches to keep the growth momentum. The company recorded its highest ever sales in December 2012 when it sold 2.98 lakh motorcycles registering a 13 % growth over December 2011 sales.
