Bharatiya Janata Party, Aam Aadmi Party at loggerheads: What next?

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – all hinges on Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.

The Delhi Assembly elections result announced on Sunday failed to declare a clear winner even though it threw up Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the biggest party and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a clear number two. All options are now being weighed on who will form the government and how.

The Election Commission will have to clear the confusion and declare all the winning candidates through a gazette notification, a process that will take another two days.

It will now depend on the BJP to either stake claim to form the government or wait for Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to invite its leader Harsh Vardhan to do so as the leader of the single largest party. If the BJP declines, the AAP could also be invited. But this too will be at the discretion of the L-G .

In either case, any party will have to prove its majority in the House within a specified period of time. And in case there is no way out of the impasse, there may be a spell of the L-G?s rule, which could last for a maximum of six months in one go. This could be extended up to one year.
