In the backdrop of a tussle within the Congress over PM Manmohan Singh’s visit to Sri Lanka, top BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu Thursday sought to mount pressure on party leadership to pursue the issue.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief Pon Radhakarishnan along with senior state unit leaders LA Ganeshan and KL Lakhsman is learnt to have met BJP president Rajnath Singh Thursday to convey the state unit’s views. The leaders are learnt to have urged the party leadership to speak against the alleged human rights violations against Tamils in Sri Lanka and caution the government against disregarding the Tamil sentiment.
While party sources refused to divulge if Rajnath gave any assurance, sources said he told state unit leaders to communicate to their supporters that the saffron party was concerned about the rights of Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
The BJP leadership has been silent on this issue so far, with a strong section of the top brass in favour of not objecting to the proposed visit. ENS
