While Congress poll panel is expected to approve the name of Pratibha Singh, former MP and wife of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, on Monday as its candidate for the Mandi bypoll, the BJP on Sunday announced that Jairam Thakur will file his nomination as the party candidate on June 1.
Top BJP leaders, led by state president Satpal Satti, former chief ministers Shanta Kumar and Prem Kumar Dumal, hailed the decision to field Thakur, four-time MLA and a former minister.
“Jairam is most the suitable candidate to give a befitting defeat to any Congress candidate. In fact, the UPA’s corruption at the national level and the state’s lackluster performance has disillusioned the people,” said a joint statement by seven BJP leaders, including Dhumal and Kumar.
“After filing nomination, the BJP will organise a rally at Mandi to kickstart campaign,” Spokesman Ganesh Dutt said.
