The Bavarian automaker showcased the updated version of its largest selling executive sedan the 5 Series, a few months back at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle was launched in India on 10th October 2013. The all-new 2014 updated BMW 5 Series has alterations that are stylistic, with few added luxuries to pamper the enthusiasts. BMW along with Mercedes Benz and Audi, forms the "German Big 3" luxury carmakers which are the three best-selling luxury automobile makers in the world. This updated 2014 BMW 5 series which is in its 6th generation, will compete against Audi A6, the recently launched Mercedes-Benz E Class and Jaguar XF. The BMW 5 Series facelift commands a price tag of Rs. 46.90 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi).
The changes in this new updated 5 series are very subtle. Externally, the new car gets revised chrome kidney grill, a refreshed bumper and restyled headlight units. Now, the Xenon is standard across the range but one can opt for BMW LED adaptive lighting which includes Adaptive Headlights with variable city and freeway light distribution, anti-dazzle high-beam assistant and cornering light, featuring an automatic high-beam and low-beam headlight function conversion adjustment.
The system thus gives best all-around road illumination in all weather conditions. The boomerang shaped chrome applique is thrown around the all new full LED front fog lamps. The wing mirrors sports amber turn indicators. The updated car has finer crease on the bonnet as compared to the outgoing car. At the rear, the vehicle gets restyled tail lamps with redesigned reflectors and slightly tweaked rear bumper. The two new variant packages on offer on the new 2014 5Series are the luxury line package and modern line package in addition to the existing M sport line packages. The car rides on 18’’ low profile radials in all the three variants. The newly designed multi spoke alloy wheels are used in the luxury line while in M sport, the package includes light alloys double spoke design and in the modern line, turbine shaped light alloy wheels are used.
Internally, the car gets new options for the upholstery levels, including trim. Plenty of chrome surrounds have been offered in the updated car; there are chrome surrounds around the 10.2’’ multi-function instrumentation display unit which include four mode comfort, ECO, PRO, and sport mode and around the touchscreen infotainment system. There is a new cabin ambience lighting system which switches between amber and white light surround. There is an option of new comfort system which lets you to access the boot and close it by just hovering your foot under the rear bumper of the vehicle. This updated car boosts a new coasting mode which shuts the powertrain when the vehicle is coasting to save fuel.
The German automaker claims that the interior space and fuel efficiency both have increased in the new updated 5Series; the company is trying to make its hot seller more tempting than before. All the three variants offer illuminated door sill plates with their respected variant names on it. The rear-seat entertainment system flaunts two individual 9 inch adjustable displays and rear DVD playback. The rear occupants can also access navigation maps on this screen during travel. All the operations are done through a remote control. Auxiliary connections are provided for MP3 player; headphones and gaming consoles are also wireless.
The car is available only in diesel fuel trim as the production of the existing petrol variants has been stalled by the company. The base variant BMW 520d luxury line comes loaded with the dominating 2.0-litre, 16V, 1995cc diesel engine which produces a respectable 184 BHP and delivers an ARAI certified fuel economy of 11.5 kmpl. The 520d modern line is also the same, mechanically. BMW 525d Luxury line sports 1995cc, 218PS oil burner with a healthy peak torque of 450 Nm. Powering the top-of-the-line 530d m sports line package is a 2993cc diesel engine mustering 258 break horse power and peak torque of 540 Nm.
The car sports BMW active hybrid 5 technology including dynamic stability control and dynamic traction control. On the safety front the BMW 5 series has got a Euro NCAP rating of 4 stars out of 5 and cabin includes 6 SRS air bags. The car is equipped with ABS plus EBD and brake assist. The features on the car are heap up windscreen display, all around camera systems, BMW’s i-drive touch controller and the manufacturer’s active protection system which help in the protection of the occupant by monitoring the driver.
