Last week saw the release of three small budget movies. Interestingly, all the movies featured fairly known actors. Sooper Se Ooper starred stand-up comedian Vir Das, who has earlier been part of films like – Badmaash Company, Go Goa Gone etc. Ishq Actually has Aamir hero, Rajeev Khandelwal in the lead, while DAR Motion Picture?s Mickey Virus has television?s popular host, Manish Paul making his film debut. Of the three, it was the Paul starrer that managed to attract the audience. The film?s box-office performance, though did not impress the trade analysts and theatre owners.

?It was surprising to see a small film like Mickey… getting a wider release?in 1200 screens ? than the other films that opened last week. That being the case, performance wise, all the three films are a disaster. In fact some shows of these films were even cancelled on Friday itself,? says trade analyst Amod Mehra.

At G7, Mumbai, Mickey Virus had four shows per day on its opening weekend. According to Manoj Desai, Executive Director, of the multiplex, the Mickey… collected ` 830 on Friday, Rs.773 on Saturday and Rs.1191 on Sunday. Sooper Se Ooper and Ishq Actually were a total washout.

At Cinepolis India (a multiplex chain), the film was given 10 shows per day across India, as opposed to the other two?Super Se Ooper and Ishq Actually which received three shows each. ?Mickey… got 35 per cent average occupancy in its opening weekend, whereas the other two got 15 per cent average occupancy across India. We have some expectations from the Manish Paul starrer. We hope it manages to collect some more in the coming days,? says Mayank Shroff, Manager Programming and Film Marketing, Cinepolis India.

According to Mickey?s… distributor, the film which was made on a cost of Rs. 6.50 crore managed to collect Rs.7.4 crore nett in its opening weekend. ?We expected it to do a little better than its current performance. I think the pre-Diwali phase where families are busy with the festival?s preparation affected the movie?s business,? says Murli Chhatwani, distributor of the film. He further adds, ?Having said that, I am happy that the film has done comparatively better in Delhi NCR and Punjab and I hope it continues to do so.?
