Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology Environment and Forest to empower the state authority to grant environmental clearances for minor mineral projects irrespective of their areas instead of present limit of 50 hectares. The demand was raised by Badal before the chairman of standing committee Dr T Subbarami Reddy, who called on Badal at his residence late Tuesday. Expressing concern over the inordinate delay in environment clearance for mineral projects of 50 hectares, Badal said that the state cases regarding this were still pending with the central authorities for the last six months despite his personal frequent requests to the Central ministers.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday deeply mourned the demise of Uttamjit Kaur (75), the wife of former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, ex-MP Tarlochan Singh, who passed away at her residence on Wednesday morning after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband, a son and two daughters. She was the daughter of an eminent freedom fighter Akali Balwant Singh, who had spent 11 years in jail during the freedom struggle. The chief minister will attend the cremation in New Delhi.
‘Instruct colleges to follow anti-ragging norms’
CHANDIGARH: Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister Anil Joshi on Wednesday issued strict instructions to all government and private Polytechnics and ITI’s to get anti-ragging undertakings from students as well as their parents on the time of admission. He said that the students and parents can download the form from the UGC website www.antiragging.in and email@example.com. Joshi further directed the Technical Education Department to issue instructions to all the institutions to follow the Supreme Court guidelines in this regard. He said that strict action would be taken against the institution found violating the norms.
Punjab to commemorate Mahalanobis birth date
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government will celebrate the National Statistics Day on June 29, the birth anniversary of Prof P C Mahalanobis, the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute.
