The state cabinet on Tuesday approved payment of monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to the farmers of Singur who refused to accept the price of their land when the Left Front government acquired 1,000 acres of land at Singur for Tata Motors’ small car manufacturing unit.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the payment at a function last month to mark the completion of one year of Trinamool Congress in office.
A total of 3,750 farmers who refused cheques have been chosen for payment of the stipend. The cabinet today approved disbursal of Rs 75 lakh for payment of the stipend for two months. The money has been arranged from the budget of the Department of Commerce and Industries. A fresh approval of the cabinet will be needed after two months for distribution of the same.
The state cabinet also gave legal sanction for transfer of land at Salt Lake which could be done by paying a fee of Rs 5 lakh per cottah. However, no fee has to be given if the transfer is done among kin, according to the government circular.
