The Supreme Court on Thursday resumed hearing on a petition filed by Tata Group against the government?s decision to allow Reliance Power (Rpower), an Anil Ambani-group firm, to divert excess coal from the captive mines meant for the Rs 20,000-crore Sasan ultra mega power project in Madhya Pradesh, for its power project at Chitrangi in the same state.
A bench headed by Justice HL Dattu during the course of hearing observed that it cannot ask Sasan UMPP to shut operations and make it lose thousands of crores invested in the already commissioned project. However, it said that it can consider directing the UMPP not to divert coal to other projects.
However, Reliance opposed an application to furnish CAG report on Sasan UMPP in the court, saying it has to be placed before PSC first.
TPC had alleged that the government decision to allow RPower to divert surplus coal from the 3,960 MW Sasan project to the 4,000 MW Chitrangi project was detrimental to public interest.
