The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on Odisha mining is expected to submits its final report to the court in the last week of July.

The two-member CEC team, comprising NK Jaiwarika and Madan Mohan Vyas, is now in Odisha and making an independent assessment of the status of mining activities. On Tuesday, the team met mining companies’ representatives and leaseholders and heard their side of story.

The committee is proposing a field visit to get first-hand information about mining activities at the ground level. On Monday, the CEC had a meeting with state government officials, including development commissioner I Srinivas, steel and mines secretary G Srinivasan and director of mines Deepak Mohanty, besides top-level officials from the state forest and environment department, state pollution control board and the Indian Bureau of Mines.

The CEC members also scrutinised files of 187 mines that are now operational and reviewed the 26 mines which were closed temporarily following a Supreme Court directive in April. The team took note of other working mines that have been operational under deemed extension for years.

The Supreme Court had ordered closure of 26 mainstream mines in Odisha over non-renewal of leases.
