With its tie-up with Bajaj Auto for developing a low-cost car gone awry, the Japanese motor company its charting its own path to stage a competition to world cheapest car Nano. Under its recently revived Datsun brand, Nissan is planning to develop a platform for an ultra low-cost car under the price tag of Rs 1.2 lakh. Renault Nissan have an agreement with two wheeler major Bajaj for a similar car but no decision has been taken on the product the latter had showcased during the Delhi Auto Expo in January. There is a big chunk of the market where Nissan does not have any presence.
In the small car segment too, the company has hardly made any mark with its hatch Micra launched two years ago.
Its SUV is too overpriced for Rs 24 lakh, a market segment dominated by Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endevour.
With planned indegenoys production of low-cost Datsun in India, the Nissan can hope of laying its hands on a decent chunk of the market catered to by Nano.
