AROUND 12 students were injured in a clash among students of Swami Parmanand College of Engineering and Technology at Jaulan Kalan village, near Lalru, after a group of students from J&K allegedly cheered for the Pakistan cricket team while watching an ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Tuesday night.
The students were watching the match on TV in the hostel common room. When the students from Jammu and Kashmir cheered for the Pakistan team, others objected, leading to an altercation. Later, more students joined in and a clash took place. The two groups fought with stones, sticks and whatever they could lay their hands on and vandalised hostel property. The college authorities summoned the police, which brought the situation under control.
Tension gripped the college again on Wednesday when around 30 students, allegedly joined by the local BJP leaders, blocked the Chandigarh-Ambala national highway for about an hour in the afternoon. College principal Dr P D Sharma said that the college will remain closed till September 8. Of the 12 injured, four are admitted to private hospitals, but none of them are serious. Others received minor injuries.
