Cockroaches, spiders and houseflies were allegedly found in midday meal supposed to be served to the students of Government High School, Colony no 4, on Thursday. The food was prepared and supplied by the Institute of Hotel Management, Sector 42. But the meal was not served to any student after insects were detected.

Tempers ran high after parents gathered in the school and raised slogans against the administration and officials of the Education Department.

However, Principal, Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management Institute, Sector 42, Bharti Tyagi said, “The food was absolutely fine when it was cooked. After tasting and checking the whole food, the supervisors signed the inspection check list themselves this morning. We have been taking extra precautions to keep the food clean as much as possible and this is the reason why we haven’t received any such complaint ever before.”

One of the attendants who serves food to the students said insects were found in the meals a day before too, and the headmistress and the supervisor were informed about it.

Headmistress Surinder Pal Kaur denied receiving any such complaint. “We didn’t get any complaint yesterday. Otherwise, we would have taken some action. We receive food from the same institute for three consecutive days of the week and have not faced such a problem ever before. Now, this food will be sent back, as we have asked for new food to be cooked,” she said.

Following the accusations, the Education Department ordered a probe.

The attendants said that the people who supplied the food said that there was no insect in the food, when they supplied it. “They said we wrongly assumed garlic pieces as spider legs in the meals,” said Poonam, an attendant.

S K Chadha, chief engineer, who was in the school for inspection, said, “I have checked with other schools, where the same food was supplied, and there is no such complaint from anywhere. I cannot say with surety that the school’s midday meal room lacks cleanliness till an inquiry into the incident is completed.”

The colony residents registered a complaint against the administration and said that if the administration could not provide healthy food to the students under the scheme, the children should be given cash amount. “The officials of the education department are supposed to check the food before serving it to various schools.
