Colleges grapple with excess admissions in popular courses

For 33 seats in its Zoology Honours course, Zakir Hussain College has had to admit 105 students.

The third list may still hold out some hope for students wanting to study in Delhi University (DU), but when it comes to popular courses, most colleges seem to be already booked beyond capacity, with many having over-admitted students in certain courses.

?Despite keeping our cut-offs fairly high this year, we have had to over-admit students in certain courses like Economics Honours and Political Science Honours,? Pratibha Jolly, Principal, Miranda House, told Newsline.

For 54 seats in Economic Honours, the college has had to admit 88 students, and for 62 seats in Political Science Honours, the college has already admitted more than 100 students.

While the college did not take out a second cut-off list for Political Science, for Economic Honours, the cut-off was pegged at 96-96.75 per cent in the second list.

For 33 seats in its Zoology Honours course, Zakir Hussain College has had to admit 105 students. ?We have had to over-admit students in our Commerce and Zoology Honours course, but the difference is huge in Zoology Honours, where we have admitted 105 students for a sanctioned strength of 33 seats,? Dr Aslam Parvaiz, Principal, Zakir Hussain College, said.

?We will have to divide the course into batches to accommodate all students. We are also expecting some students to withdraw. All said, this was not expected. Students don?t usually prefer studying science courses at the university, so this was a surprise,? Parvaiz said.

IP College for Women has also over-admitted students into certain courses, despite keeping high cut-offs. ?We have had to over-admit students in Commerce, English, Political Science, Mathematics, Media Studies and Economics,? Babli Moitra, Principal, IP College, said.

Ramjas College too has over-admitted students in popular courses like BA Economics (Hons), BSc Statistics (Hons), BA History (Hons) and BA Political Science (Hons). In courses like Economics (Hons), the college has admitted over 100 students for around 60 seats.

In Kirori Mal College, there has been over-admission in popular humanities courses like BA Political Science (Hons). For barely two-three seats in Geography and History, the college is likely to come up with a third cut-off for general category students.

Having admitted 150-plus students for 123 seats, SRCC has also over-admitted students into its Economics Honours programme. But according to its principal, the college has over-admitted students deliberately to keep the class strength intact.

?Admitting 10 per cent students over and above the number of sanctioned seats is permissible since some students tend to leave the course. Students are also admitted into super-numeric quota like sports, PWD etc. So, we tend to over-admit students to keep the class strength intact,? P C Jain, Principal, SRCC, said.

Venkateshwara College has also marginally over-admitted students into its science courses. Senior officials at the college, however, said that marginal over-admissions are done each year, since students tend to shift to other colleges.
