It was a busy Friday for most political leaders in the capital. With the Election Commission scheduling the announcement of poll dates for Friday evening, many advanced their inauguration schedules to beat the model code of conduct.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s office said “all last-minute inaugurations were done before 3.30 pm” on Friday. An event slated for Saturday at Dikshit’s residence — the release a document called “20 Saal: 100 Kamaal” — has been termed a “political” event, which “would have no bearing on the implementation of the model code”.
BJP MLA from Delhi Cantonment Karan Singh Tanwar, who was to inaugurate a gymnasium at Old Nangal in his constituency at 5 pm, advanced the event to 3 pm.
Dikshit also laid the foundation stone for laying internal and peripheral sewer lines in Gandhi Vihar resettlement colony. She was accompanied by Union minister Kapil Sibal, MLA and president of the Rural Development Board Mangat Ram Singhal.
The CM also announced that the Dr B R Ambedkar University would have its permanent campus near Dhirpur on Outer Ring Road and announced free allotment of low-cost houses to SC families. A new website — www.delhicelebrates.in — was also launched “well before 3.30 pm” on Friday.
The Election Office said all government advertisements will be taken off now that the model code of conduct had come into force.
