After Congress president Sonia Gandhi wrote to the PM to ensure fair treatment to suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, party has decided to take up the case of Dalit writer Kanwal Bharti who was arrested for his Facebook post critcising CM Akhikesh Yadav and Cabinet Minister Azam Khan over Nagpal’s suspension.
A delegation led by Congress leader in the Legislative Council Naseeb Pathan will on August 14 meet Bharti in Rampur, the Assembly constituency of Azam Khan, and submit a fact-finding report to state Congress president Nirmal Khatri.
“Our line of action would be decided after our meeting with the writer,” Naseeb Pathan said.
The delegation will comprise presidents of district as well as city Congress units as its members.
“In Rampur, a separate government is running under the dictatorship of state Urban Development Minister Azam Khan. He can order demolition of any structure that he wants, be it historical or religious, and can order anyone’s arrest. There was nothing wrong in what the writer (Bharti) had said, thus we are supporting him. We are collecting information about all such actions taken in recent past,” said newly appointed Rampur district Congress president Sardar Dilbag Singh.
In the meantime, Rampur Youth Congress president Nauman Khan has been asked to write to the PM and seek security for Bharti who has
alleged threats by the SP workers.
