Convention on challenges, opportunities for company secretaries under Cos Act

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is organising a three-day national convention in the city from Thursday to discuss issues related to challenges and opportunities for company secretaries after implementation of the new Companies Act.

About 1,100 delegates, who are company secretaries, are expected to join the meet, the theme of which is ‘CS-Change, Challenge, Opportunity’.

?This convocation is unique in the sense that it will be the first after the Companies Act, 2013, is being implemented partially in the country. In the backdrop of the new Act, we have decided this time the convention will be based on the theme ‘Change, Challenge and Opportunities for CS professionals’,? ICSI president R Sridharan said on Wednesday.

?Change now is inevitable in the present day?s context as the Companies Act has been substituted after 56 years. That is the change now. The challenge is inbuilt in the Companies Act, 2013. There are many

areas opened up to company secretaries under the Act. Since company secretaries can be elevated to key managerial positions, they have

a gamut of challenges to

ensure that compliances

are done in letter and

spirit,? Sridharan told FE, which is the print media partner for the 42nd national convention of company secretaries.

According to him, at present opportunities are plenty for CS professionals under the new Act.

?I am not looking at the Companies Act 2013 alone. There are areas open under other enactments like Sebi and pollution control and competition laws ? everywhere company secretary practitioners are playing

a role. Now for the first

time the Companies Act recognises secretarial audits for certain types of

companies. This is a big opportunity for company secretaries. They can also be liquidators and valuers,? Sridharan averred.

He said as many as 19 eminent speakers will take part in the event. It will be deliberated under six sessions, including the inaugural and valedictory session. Canara Bank CMD RK Dubey will be present at Thursday?s inaugural session and former Union minister M Veerappa Moily is expected to be present at a special session.

ICSI said five to 10 foreign delegates from Singapore, Malaysia, Ghana and South Africa are also participating in the convention.
