The Mumbai Crime Branch has initiated the procedure of getting custody of gangster Yusuf Suleiman Kadri alias Yusuf Bachkana, who allegedly made extortion calls to Borivali builder Rajaram Manjaokar and ordered a firing at his car last month. The Crime Branch is probing whether he was running an extortion racket from a Karnataka jail. Bachkana is serving a murder sentence in Belgaum central jail, Hindalga. On May 28, four persons fired three rounds at Manjaokar’s car and fled. Kasturba Marg police arrested one accused, Parshuram Nalawade, while the Crime Branch later arrested three accused, Rajendra Rawat alias Raju Nepali (32), Snehal alias Sunny Sawant (23) and Virendra Jadhav (18). Bachkana allegedly tried to extort Manjaokar and ordered the firing when Manjaokar did not heed his demands.
“We have written to the home department seeking permission to bring Bachkana to Mumbai for interrogation. If we get permission, we will seek a production warrant, after which we will approach a court in Belgaum for Bachkana’s transit remand,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch (Detection II) Ambadas Pote
Crime Branch officers said Bachkana would coordinate with Raju Nepali whenever he was produced in Mumbai courts. Nepali allegedly provided him contact details of Manjaokar.
“We are trying to find out how Bachkana got a cellphone inside the jail and used it without being detected,” said an officer.
The Belgaum jail authorities have not yet contacted Crime Branch in this regard, Pote said. Belgaum jail superintendent Veerbahdra Swamy was unavailable for comment.
