Dabangg steals the show

The nation learned a new word in 2010 and the superstar of the masses proved that he still had it in him to deliver the hardest-hitting performance of the year.

The nation learned a new word in 2010 and the superstar of the masses proved that he still had it in him to deliver the hardest-hitting performance of the year. Dabangg, with unprecedented box office collections, picked up a total of six awards at the Karbonn Mobiles 17th Annual Star Screen Awards on Thursday including the best actor trophy for Salman Khan. The entertaining potboiler also won newcomer Sonakshi Sinha an award for most promising newcomer ?female, while the delightfully rustic Munni Badnaam Hui from the same movie won its choreographer Farah Khan and playback singer Mamta Sharma an award each.

The best actress award went to Vidya Balan for the second consecutive year, for her stunning portrayal as a scheming widow in Ishqiya. Her co-star Arshad Warsi won the best actor in a supporting role ? male, while Gulzar won best lyrics trophy for popular favourite Ibn-e-batuta from the same movie.

The critically acclaimed Udaan, which had bagged the maximum number of jury nominations at 14, picked up the second highest number of trophies at four, including Best Picture and Best Director for Vikramaditya Motwane. It was a tie with 2010?s late surprise Band Baaja Baaraat, which also picked up four trophies including for Best Dialogue, Best Editing and the Most Promising Debut Director for Maneesh Sharma.

The event, held at the MMRDA Grounds in Mumbai?s Bandra-Kurla Complex, saw most of Bollywood turn up in droves and grace not just the audience, but also the stage. Katrina Kaif gave a sizzling performance to her hit song Sheila ki Jawani, while Shahid Kapoor, who had entertained as host and performer at last year?s Star Screen awards, played a return date, by performing to a medley of his hit songs. Fresh couple of the year, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh gave a star turn as the evening?s hosts , giving full evidence of the chemistry they shared in their hit movie Band Baaja Baarat. It was an especially memorable evening for debutant Singh, who picked up the Most Promising Newcomer ? Male award.

Considering that this was a year when the jury?s list was dominated by unusual choices, it?s not surprising that Best Story was won by Amit Rai for Road to Sangam. In the same vein, Shernaz Patel won Best Actor in a Supporting Role ? Female for her performance in Guzaarish, and Ronit Roy won his very first Star Screen award, picking up Best Actor in a Negative Role, for his turn as an abusive father in Udaan.

The Ramnath Goenka Award went to My Name is Khan. The movie also won leading man Shah Rukh Khan the Best Actor ? Male Award in the popular category. In the same category , Katrina Kaif picked up the Best Actor ? Female.
