The Delhi Budget, presented by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament on Friday, has earmarked funds for women security and assistance to the elderly in the city.
To ensure a safe stay in Delhi while earning their livelihood, government has proposed six working women hostels. Currently, Delhi government is running only two working women hostels — in Rohini And Vishwas Nagar. These six hostels will be constructed under public private partnership mode.
The government has also taken into consideration the rising population of the elderly in the city. Corporations have failed to disburse pensions in a timely and consistent manner to the elderly and has kept blaming the then Congress government for lack of funds. Now, the government has increased the monthly aid to senior citizens between the age of 60-69 years to Rs1,000. For those above 70 years, the amount will be Rs 1,500. The government has extended the pension facility to 4.30 lakh people against 3.9 lakh people previously.
Further, the government has also proposed to increase the plan outlay under Pension to Senior Citizens from Rs 538 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 600 crore in 2014-15.
The government has also promised financial support to two children each of incarcerated parents till they turn 18 or until such time as when the parents are released.
Also, to take care of the mentally challenged, it has promised three more homes for mentally challenged inmates.
On the issue of women safety in Delhi, Jaitley said the process of recruitment of 155 women sub-inspectors and 1,434 women constables is on and these women personnel are expected to join Delhi Police in 2014-15. The Union Minister also said in the current year, 8,124 girls have been imparted self-defence training and 4,925 police personnel have attended gender sensitization programme.
On the issue of National Food Security Act, the minister said the diversion of rations meant for lakhs of families which are below poverty line will be plugged. To achieve this target, 2,500 fair price shops will be computerised and the daily sale from these shops will be monitored online.
