As more and more people spend supplementary time on their handsets, their appetite for content, quality and the speed at which it is delivered is growing exponentially. According to IDC, the next few years will see rapid growth in not only in smartphones but also these segments which are in a nascent stage today. In the handset section, the smartphones are predicted to drive 90% of the market. The major part of the pie, as high as 57%, will be driven by the smart devices and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) is poised to represent 37.2% of the total global workforce.

We are seeing a significant change in the way people are working. With the consumerisation of enterprise mobility, a growing percentage of workers are using their personal devices to access corporate resources. There is a need to work from anywhere, anytime over any media and over any device, namely BYOD. While 2012-13 was considered to be a rolling stone for the widespread use of BYOD, 2014-15 ought to mark its proliferation as there is an increasing acceptance and evidence of the fact that BYOD can drive better work efficiencies.

In India, the percentage of knowledge workers who use mobile devices is around 70% and more than 50% of these devices are owned by the employee.

According to IDC, by 2015 the world?s mobile worker population will reach 1.3 billion.

This creates an ever-increasing demand to stay connected anytime-anywhere and has opened up new growth avenues for the India data dongle market. It guarantees plug-and-play seamless connectivity. With enterprise mobility turning into a necessity and the need to access data all the time, data usage over Wi-Fi will lead customers towards multi-device usage where they would rely on single connectivity providing seamless access of internet across devices. However, when these devices are not secured by mobile device management (MDM), they introduce a wide range of security threats.

Research suggests that this trend is only continuing to increase. By asking employees to bring their own device and enabling those devices with corporate content, companies can ease the management burden by eliminating the need to select and manage a provider and plan. The service provider can directly handle these processes for the organisation allowing them to focus on its core capabilities than monitoring employee usage data. Additionally, corporations also save money due to the lower costs associated with individually managed call, data, and SMS plans. BYOD models eliminate the requirement for an IT administrator to administrate a mobile plan. It also reduces the strain on IT help desks since end users will be primarily responsible for reaching out to their mobile provider if they need support.

Since our personal and professional domains have started overlapping in an extensive manner, data mobility will be essential ? thus the growth of the personal cloud. This year, is poised to see cloud grow as a portable and ubiquitous platform which will cater to all their digital requirements. Thus, the change in focus is from a client device to a service that can function across platforms, across devices and is easy to access. Since enterprises are hard pressed to play multiple roles in coordinating IT-related activities, cloud services brokerage may see significant traction. While it helps improve the provisioning and consumption of inherently distributed, heterogeneous and complex cloud services for an organisation?s internal users and external business partners; it acts as a value centre in the face of initial hiccups that accrue due to the increasing adoption of cloud. While mobility and data access is essential, what?s also important is the way data is stored.

With other technological adoptions, 2014 in all due respect, will also see a bend towards big data which takes a leap to multiple systems of data storage speeding up processes and managing data faster; unlike traditional single enterprise data warehouses.
