The first budget of the trifurcated municipal corporation has proposed a hike in parking rates.
In his budget speech, North Corporation commissioner P K Gupta said, For the first hour, proposed parking charge for four-wheelers is Rs 20, up from Rs 10. For up to 6 hours, the charge is Rs 50, up from Rs 20. For 7 to 12 hours, parking charges are Rs 75. The monthly parking charge will be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500.
For markets which witness a high footfall, the proposed monthly parking charge is Rs 1,800, up from Rs 800.
For two-wheerlers, the proposed parking for an hour is Rs 10. Other slabs are Rs 20 for up to six hours and Rs 60 for 12 hours. The proposed monthly charge is Rs 500. As of now, two-wheelers pay maximum parking of Rs 15 per day and Rs 250 per month.
For tempos, auto rickshaws and rickshaws, the proposed parking rates are Rs 20 for an hour; Rs 50 for six hours, Rs 70 for 12 hours, and monthly parking is Rs 4000.
The current parking rates are Rs 50 for over 10 hours and Rs 1,250 monthly.
For buses and trucks, proposed charge is Rs 50 for an hour, Rs 100 for six hours and for Rs 200 for 12 hours. The monthly is proposed at Rs 4,500. Present parking rates are Rs 30 up to 10 hours and Rs 60 after that. Monthly parking rates are Rs 1,500.
If the new rates come into effect, tourist cars and SUVs will have to pay Rs 50 for an hour; Rs 75 for a day. Tourist buses will have to pay Rs 100 per hour and Rs 200 a day.
The BJP-led North Municipal Corporation is yet to finalise the budget proposal. It may approve a hike in parking rates, a U-turn on their stand in last years budget that imposed no additional taxes on citizens.
People are already reeling under taxes imposed upon them by Delhi and Central government. We cannot impose any more taxes, but we need every committee to decide on the budget, North corporation Standing Committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia said.
Leader of Opposition Mukesh Goel criticised the BJP, which rules the civic body. Before elections, the BJP claimed that they would not put additional financial burden on people, but the proposed budget has been prepared after BJP leaders approval,
