eBay to hire 700 software engineers by 2016

E-commerce marketplace giant has inaugurated its global development centre in Bangalore.

E-commerce marketplace giant eBay on Thursday?inaugurated its global development centre in Bangalore and will hire 700 software engineers by 2016 over and above the 300 people currently employed at its centre here.

The facility will host several centres of excellence for both eBay Marketplaces and PayPal across various domains like analytics, user experience design, information security among others. eBay, which acquired payment solutions company Paypal in 2002, already has a ?development centre in Chennai that employs around 2,000?and the eBay India business unit in Mumbai.

SR Patil, minister of IT, biotechnology?and science & technology, government of Karnataka, said, ?This?reconfirms our place on the world map for global product and technology innovation, and brings hundreds of high-value jobs to our country. It is a testament to?the ease of doing business that the world?s leading companies like eBay choose to invest here on a long-term basis.?

According to Ken Moss, vice-president of technology and sciences, eBay Marketplaces, the company is building centres of excellence across the globe and the hiring will be driven by business. ?We are scouting for talent across the board for software development around the world to better enable our global platform, as?connected commerce is reinvented everyday,? said Moss.

He added that eBay, which has 12 crore buyers and 2.5 crore sellers on board, will hire from colleges, start-ups and from other companies at four different levels for the centre.
