SummaryECI has identified 38 per cent of the total 44,579 polling stations (in both phases) as critical.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) for the first time have decided to photograph each voter queuing up at the critical polling stations across Gujarat to ensure peaceful elections.

The ECI has identified 38 per cent of the total 44,579 polling stations (in both phases) as critical, making them subject to additional security and precautions.

“To avoid duplication and other malpractices, ECI has decided to take photographs of each voter during elections at some of the critical polling stations. Adding to this will be recording of election through webcasting and videography which will have live access,” said Anita Karwal, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Gujarat.

However, the official refused to divulge the names of the polling stations.

“Sabarmati is one of such areas where photographs of every voter will be taken,” said one of the officials in-charge of elections.

“Over 41 per cent of total 4,833 polling stations in Ahmedabad district are identified as critical of which majority are in the old city areas,” the official said adding that Ahmedabad is one among the districts that has a much higher percentage of critical polling stations than the average 38 per cent for the state.

Out of total 44,579 polling stations in the state, for both the phases, 17,029 have been categorised as critical, ECI.

Apart from recording and live telecast, special micro observers will also be deputed inside many polling stations. These micro observers will be assigned to observe the process from inside the station and then submit a separate report.
