The new employment bank set up by the Mamata Banerjee government has begun to showcase the magnitude of the unemployment problem in the state. Twenty-seven postgraduate engineers, 142 MBAs, two MPhil and four PhD degree holders are among 16,581 job-seekers who have enrolled in the state governments flagship employment bank project in one month.
The state government set up the employment bank on July 26 and advised all unemployed people to register their names as job seekers.
The response has been tremendous. Reports available to us state that 16,581 job seekers including seven medical graduates have registered their names, a state employment department official said.
We did not expect postgraduate engineers and postgraduate management degree holders to enlist their names. Even PhD and MPhil degree holders have started enrolling, a highly placed official at the employment directorate said. Sixteen firms have registered in the employment bank as employers, the official added.
Sixty-two information technology graduates, 53 management graduates, 3108 graduate engineers and 1581 honours graduates have enrolled their names in the employment bank, he said.
Quoting a report on the employment bank, a labour department official said: Till 31 August, 2859 Madhyamik-passed persons enrolled in the employment bank as well as 1439 Higher Secondary students of arts stream.
In total, 775 Higher Secondary students from science stream and 530 from commerce stream have registered. In all, 2944 people who have completed technical diploma course, including those offered by polytechnic colleges, have registered their names.
