A 24-year old woman, a former airhostess with a private airline, hanged herself in her East Delhi residence on Wednesday as she was reportedly depressed after being fired from her job for being too thin.
A senior police officer said, “The body of Aruna Singh was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room around 7 pm. She was depressed because she had been dismissed from her job about four months ago for being too thin. Since then, she had been trying to put on weight. We have begun proceedings and an inquiry under 174 CrPC.”
Police said Aruna was living in a joint family in Lalita Park area. She was allegedly anorexic. Family members told police that she had landed a job with a private airlines but had to leave it four months ago for being too thin. After that, Aruna slipped into depression and was undergoing treatment for it. She was also attending spoken English classes in Uttam Nagar to enhance her personality, her family told police.
According to police, Aruna had a chat with her younger sister on Wednesday evening. She then went up to her third floor room and locked it from inside. Around 7 pm, her brother found the door locked and broke it open. He found Aruna hanging from the fan by her dupatta.
Police were informed and the body was sent to Sabzi Mandi morgue. A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Thursday, police said.
DCP (East) Ajay Kumar said, “The family members are in a state of shock after the incident. We will talk to them in detail tomorrow and probe what prompted her to take this extreme step.”
