Banker Meera Sanyal, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday, said she would like to fight the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai South. The former chairperson and CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS India), who contested in 2009 as an Independent candidate from the same constituency, had campaigned for Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in New Delhi and Greater Kailash seats during the Assembly elections but had not formally joined it.
?I am impressed with not just the leadership of the AAP but also by the rank and file which consists of good people with ideals and integrity who are in politics to serve the people ? they are people I identified with. I would like to fight the Lok Sabha elections… The party will decide which seat but my own preference is South Mumbai where I fought in 2009 too,? Sanyal told The Indian Express from Kolkata.
Sanyal, who stepped down from RBS to enter public life, hopes her own role in the party would be in the field banking and economy. ?There is a perception that AAP?s economic policies are along the lines of the Left. I am not in favour of subsidies but here we have parties like the Congress and BJP who just passed the Food Security Bill quibbling over a subsidy bill (that of power in Delhi) that is way smaller,? Sanyal said, adding she is waiting like many for the audit report of the power company in Delhi to find out if the AAP stance that customers were being overcharged is justified.
