The gaming industry is continuing its growth trajectory in India with exponential growth in the number of companies and start-ups in the gaming business. Rajesh Rao, Nasscom Gaming Forum chairman, says now there are over 175 gaming companies in India. Last year, this number was at 130 and in 2008 there were only 25 companies in India. Over 100 start-ups had come up in the last two years, Rao said at Nasscom Game Developer’s Conference in Pune on Friday.
The spurt in gaming on mobile platforms is one of the reasons for the growth of the gaming industry in the country, Rao said. Pune Bangalore and Hyderabad have become the major hubs for gaming companies.
The global gaming industry is witnessing a constant evolution with new technologies in the gaming circuit, affecting India as well, Rao said. The domestic market is witnessing a constant rise in demand for innovations. The performance of the mobile gaming, PC & online gaming and console gaming dictates the dynamics of the gaming industry in India.
But the gaming industry is facing a shortage of skilled personnel. While the industry requires 1,000 people a year, it meets only half of the requirement, Rao said. India is still a long way away from markets like the US, which has game titles doing billion dollar business. In India, monetising and revenue generation from games were less than 1%.
The gaming and animation courses do not meet the standards, Rao said. Therefore, Nasscom has come up with guidelines for institutes conducting courses.
