Honda Cars India has announced recall of over 31,000 units of the Brio compact hatch and Amaze compact sedan to inspect and fix a problem in the 'proportioning valve' of the brake system that, if faulty, may affect brake pressure distribution to the wheels. The affected vehicles are non-ABS models manufactured between February 28, 2013 and January 16, 2014.

“Honda would carry out inspection of Proportioning Valve of 15,623 units of non-ABS variants of Brio and 15,603 units of non-ABS variants of Petrol Amaze. There is possibility that in some of these cars there is mis-assembly of Proportioning Valve. Proportioning Valve is the part of Brake system which adjusts brake distribution pressure to the wheels,” a company statement said.

Honda added that while no complaint related to this part has been reported yet, the company will voluntarily replace the Proportioning Valve after inspection, if required. The inspection and replacement would be carried out free of cost at HCIL dealerships across India. The proportioning valve is not a part of braking system for ABS variants & therefore the ABS variants of Brio & Petrol Amaze and all variants of Diesel Amaze do not require any inspection.

Launched in 2011, the Brio was Honda's first small car to tap the mass segment. Volumes for the hatch fell 39% to 19,491 units in FY14. Meanwhile, the Amaze is one of Honda's most key products for India – it was the launch pad for Honda's first diesel engine in the domestic market and has been key to the company's revival in the domestic market – launched in mid-2013, it sold 77,711 units in FY14. Honda Cars' overall volumes in FY14 were up 83% to 1.34 lakh units.
