Huawei Ascend G6 review: Good phone for those who want to avoid the regular

Good phone for those who want to avoid the regular, buy getting hold of this phone will be tough

Before I start this review I have to tell you that Huawei does sell smartphones in India and they are available at e-commerce stores, in case your friendly neighbourhood mobile phone shop does not stock these devices. Huawei, like other big Chinese telecom companies, would like to create a name for themselves among Indian consumers. The Huawei Ascend G6 is a device that can make it popular, given that the phone has decent specifications and an affordable price tag. Here is what we thought of this new phone.

Quick Tech Specs: 4.5-inch qHD 540 x 960p display | Quad Core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor | 1GB RAM | 4GB internal memory, microSD up to 32GB | 8MP AF rear camera, 5MP front camera | micro-SIM (GSM) | 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4 | 2000 mAH battery | Android Jelly Bean

MRP: Rs 16,999

Design: The G6 is one of the thinnest phones I have held in my hand. It looks like an iPhone trampled upon by an elephant. But I mean that it a good way. Despite the thin frame, the phone does not sport an unibody design and has a rear flap that can be opened. At the bottom, the rear panel folds towards the screen just under the touch keys and this is an interesting design variation in Android.

Screen: The 4.5-inch qHD display is decent, though not great. But at this price point, this screen is good and there is not much of a difference with HD for the naked eye. The viewing angles are not all that impressive.

Performance: The G6 puts up a performance that you would expect from any mid-range Android. It does not lag with regular tasks and gets things done. The 1.2 GHz quad-core processor is becoming standard in this price range. Multi-tasking is easy and smooth.

Memory: Most smartphones that cost this much now come with at least 8GB storage. So the 4GB storage could be an issue for this phone as buyers will have to get external storage right away.

Connectivity: We did face issues with the phone forgetting the Wi-Fi networked it was linked to. However, calling and data was not an issue. After all, Huawei has its expertise in this field.

Software: This is where the phone gets a bit tricky. Yes, it runs Android, but it is not the pure vanilla variety of the operating system. So you will take some time to get used to the UI. For instance, there is no app draw an new apps are added right on to the home screens. Also, in some pages you see some Chinese text, which means the OS has not really been customised for the international audience. The phone comes with four preloaded themes, which are a good reason for you to try out a popular launcher.

Camera: Now, this the unique feature of the phone. And if you thought I was going to talk about the rear camera then you are mistaken. Actually, this phone is among the new breed to sport a 5MP front camera, which could make it a good option for selfie junkies. The front camera is definitely better that ones you find in most devices. It does help you take a better selfie, and appear yourself during video calls. But that is about it. You can?t use a better front camera for much more. However, taking selfies is easy as you can touch the screen to start a 3-second countdown. But without auto-focus, I found it really tough to get a sharp selfie. The world facing camera on the other hand works well in daylight. But indoors, the results are too grainy.

Battery: The 2000 mAh battery will last you a day if you don?t go for long hours of video playback.

Verdict: With the phone selling for at least Rs 2,000 under its MRP, the G6 appears a good buy for those who are obsessed with owning a super slim phone and appearing perfect in selfies. But it is quite hard to get hold of this device if you are not comfortable purchasing online. Buy this is if you want to stay away from the pack.
