IAF & CII join hands to resettle retiring airmen

With an aim to equip the Airmen with the requisite skill sets for enabling them to seek sustainable and befitting career prospects in civil industry sector post retirement, Indian Air Force (IAF) in collaboration with CII has embarked on a project of setting up a Vocational Training Centre (VTC).

The project has been named “Happy Landings”. The project is one of the many HR initiatives undertaken by the IAF to ensure the well being of Air Warriors and address their professional and personal aspirations.

Towards this, a MoU has been inked under which the industry body will train Airmen due for retirement in the near future on skills and capabilities required by the industry. To begin with, three focus sectors including aviation, telecom & information technology and Defence Production, have been identified on the basis of existing skills, capabilities and strength of the airmen.

The training of the CII would focus towards bridging the gap between existing skills possessed by the airmen and those required by the civil industry. However, the most unique feature of the project is that in addition to training, the chamber would also facilitate suitable placements for the personnel in the civil sector and is optimistic of providing placements to all trained personnel.

The project is envisaged to be win-win situation for IAF as well as the Industry. The Indian industry and manufacturing sector, of late, has witnessed unprecedented growth led by sectors like aviation, telecom, IT & IT enabled services, automobile, manufacturing, defence production, etc.

A large demand of skilled manpower across the industry has thus emanated which has been further escalated by the offset clauses of various high value Defence procurements. Being a high technology intensive force, the IAF has highly skilled and disciplined manpower with high morale who separate from the services at a relatively young age after serving for 20 years. With this project, Indian Industries would be able to capitalize on this dedicated, committed human resource with excellent exposure and capability to handle high technology systems.
