Rapidly expanding their global footprint, Indian wines made their debut in China’s rapidly expanding wine market being wooed hard by top global wineries.
The Indian wines were introduced at a colourful reception at the Indian embassy on Monday in which a number of local wine specialists, diplomats and media were present.
To start with, two exclusive varieties of premium wines from Grover Vineyards, a Bangalore-based Winery were introduced.
“The Art Collection” included Cabernet Shiraz and La Reserve by Michel Rolland.
“One of the premier red wines, La Reserve, has been named as one of the top-ranking wine brands in the world market by the Decanter magazine,” Alexander Cross, Sales Manager of China Wines and Spirits, which is going to distribute the wines said.
Like in India, wine drinking is catching up fast in China but most of the market is captured by local wine makers.
According to the recent data, China imports 2.5 million cases of wines a year mostly French and Australian followed by others.
Cross said initially the Chinese market is not huge for Indian wines.
To start with, Indian wines will not be available in stores but only in top hotels, restaurants and exclusive wine stores.
Speaking on the occasion, Indian ambassador S Jaishakar said Indian wine is slowly making its mark in the international arena despite facing stiff competition.
Indian wines are increasingly being recognised in the international market and are slowly gaining entry into the list of good wine brands.
Wine exports from the country are increasing at a rapid pace, he said.
The maximum exports of Indian wines are being made to the US and European countries, including France, Singapore and Malaysia, Cross said.
