The ministry of railways has implemented a hike, suggested in the interim budget, of 10% for passenger fares (across all classes) and 5% for freight rates. The ministry also increased tariffs to account for the fuel-adjusted charge. Thus, the total increase is 14.2% for passenger fares and 6.5% for freight rates. However, several double-digit fare hikes will be needed to negate losses from passenger services.
