A team of senior inspectors from four police stations will probe the Wednesday night attack on hotelier Billari Raghvendra Shetty.
Police said two motorcyclists in their twenties fired four rounds at Shetty’s Skoda (MH06AS6210) in a lane adjacent to Tanishq showroom near Fame Adlabs at 9.30 pm when he was going to a business partner’s house for dinner.
They said the attack happened as the hotelier slowed down at a speedbreaker while turning right towards Lokhandwala Circle. While Shetty managed to duck under three bullets, one pierced his shoulder.
An officer said Shetty of Evershine Nagar in Malad was owner of 20 hotels in Mumbai, Goa and Pune, including Escape lounge opposite Infinity Mall in Andheri West. Police said he also owned a construction business.
Shetty had been allegedly receiving threat calls from the underworld since 2008, when he approached Bangur Nagar Police, and had registered a non-cognisable complaint on September 3, 2010. Sources said Shetty had close links with arrested encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and had been booked for robbery and under Terrorist and Dispruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.
Police officers said he was stable but unbale to give statement. “We will ask Shetty why he was travelling alone despite having a bodyguard and driver,” said an officer. “It is clear the shooters had been following Shetty and were aware of his movements,” added the officer.
Sources said there could be an insider involved, as the attackers had been tipped-off.
