‘International standards ensure positive change to spur economic growth’

The BIS has by far established 8600 Indian Standards.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) which celebrated World Standards Day 2013 at the CII Northern Region headquarter here today holds the view that ?International Standards are powerful tools to lead to a positive change that spurs economic growth?. The BIS has by far established 8600 Indian Standards out of which 5000 standards have been harmonized with the corresponding ISO and IEC standards.

A.K, Saini, Dy Director General (North), BIS, during his welcome address said that the requirements of society for standardization is well recognized by BIS, which has initiated action for developing standards in tune with world trade. He said that in today?s increasingly globalized trading environment, international standards are powerful tools to lead positive change for spurring economic growth, adapt to climate change and open up global markets.

A.B Agrawal, Chairman, Bhakra Beas Management Board addressing a seminar organized to mark the World Standards Day on the theme ?International Standards Ensure Positive Change? observed that when products and services conform to International Standards, consumer can have confidence that they are safe, reliable and of good quality.

Agrawal added that in order to meet the global competition, to scale up industry?s operations and capture newer markets, the mantra is standardization for the Indian Industry. He observed that international standards developed by the experts from around the world, contain internationally harmonized best practice which can be used to measure, compare and increase efficiency, combat environmental issues, reduce waste and provide portability of products and services anywhere around the globe, providing society with a solid platform for positive change.

Renuka B. Salwan, Dy Director (PR) informed that later a technical session was held which was chaired by Aditya Kumar Kansal, Chief Administrative Officer (R), DMW, Indian Railways, Patiala and addressed by Rakesh Kaushal, Manager, ACC, Gaggal, Vikas Sharma, Manager QA, Quark, Mohali, Rajesh Kumar, Technical Officer, C-DAC, Mohali. About 200 persons from industry, government and non-government organizations participated.
